Embracing Meaningful Gatherings

Some Wednesdays feel especially meaningful, and yesterday was certainly one of them at Yeshikhorlo. Our weekly gathering brought together friends old and new for a blissful afternoon filled with dharma, thoughtful conversation, and joyful connections. As customary, we commenced our time by chanting the Diamond Sutra, allowing its profound teachings to settle our minds and remind us of the wisdom inherent in non-attachment.

Insights from Brian Zhang

One of the highlights of the afternoon was a captivating talk by Brian Zhang, the founder of XMind. He shared reflections that span his journey as an entrepreneur, his exploration of Buddhism, and his thoughts on the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and the dharma. Brian posited that while AI is becoming increasingly capable of processing information and generating ideas, wisdom remains a distinctly human domain.

AI can recognize patterns and analyze teachings, but it cannot cultivate compassion or experience mindfulness. Thus, he suggested, AI may serve as a powerful tool for learning the dharma, yet the actual path of practice—developing kindness, patience, and insight—resides in the human heart.

Wisdom Amidst Change

Brian’s reflection on the rapid advancement of AI calls to mind a core teaching of Buddhism: everything is impermanent and constantly changing. Rather than fearing technological advancements or becoming overly attached to them, we can approach these changes with awareness. We are encouraged to use innovation wisely while remaining grounded in ethical values and compassion.

The ensuing discussion was lively and inspiring, prompting all present to contemplate how ancient wisdom can guide us through the opportunities and challenges of a modern world. We were also honored to welcome Dr. Zhang Yulin, former president of the International Association of Good Women, whose visit enriched the gathering with warmth and meaningful exchanges.

Another joyful moment of the day was witnessing Rongyue and Rongzhi formally take refuge in the Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. We rejoice in this landmark step along their spiritual journey and offer prayers that they continue to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and steadfastness on their path.

As the afternoon drew to a close, a shared sense of gratitude enveloped us. Through chanting, learning, conversation, and new beginnings, we were reminded that each gathering represents a precious opportunity to deepen our practice and fortify our connection with one another.

May the merit of this gathering benefit all beings. Sarva Mangalam!
