Learning and Practicing Guru Rinpoche Tsok: A Three-Week Journey of Study and Practice
On the auspicious tenth day, Guru Rinpoche's blessing shines.
With one heart, the Wisdom Wheel sangha gathered together.
Listening, reflecting, and gradually entering authentic practice,
The sound of bell and vajra purified obscurations.
Through the Khenpo's compassionate guidance,
The profound meaning of Vajrayana was personally transmitted.
Mudras, mantras, and sacred ritual carried the blessings.
Offerings upon the mandala deepened faith.
Three weeks of diligent learning and practice,
One magnificent Tsok offering brought all together.
Drums and chants merged with joyful devotion,
Dharma friends walked the path with unwavering aspiration.
For Vajrayana practitioners, Dharma is far more than listening to teachings or gaining intellectual understanding. The authentic path unfolds through hearing (śravaṇa), contemplation (cintā), and meditation (bhāvanā)—bringing the teachings into genuine experience and daily practice
Within the Nyingma tradition, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is regarded as the supreme source of blessings. The 10th day of every Tibetan lunar month is observed as Guru Rinpoche Tsok Day, an especially sacred occasion for Vajrayana practitioners to confess obscurations, accumulate merit and wisdom, restore samaya, and reconnect with Guru Rinpoche's enlightened blessings.
With this aspiration, Wisdom Wheel Tibetan Buddhist Association, under the compassionate guidance of Venerable Khenpo Tsering Tashi, has long maintained the tradition of holding Guru Rinpoche Tsok every lunar tenth day. Recognizing that many overseas practitioners have limited opportunities to learn the complete Tsok liturgy and ritual in a traditional environment, Khenpo compassionately offered a dedicated training program to personally guide students through every aspect of the practice.
A Three-Week Course in Authentic Practice
This June, Wisdom Wheel organized a three-week Guru Rinpoche Tsok Training Course, held over three consecutive Sundays for a total of approximately fifteen hours.
Beginning with the meaning and purpose of Tsok offering, Khenpo combined doctrinal explanation with practical instruction, systematically teaching participants the complete liturgical sequence, ritual instruments, mudras, mantras, mandala arrangement, and offering procedures. The goal was not merely to perform the ritual correctly, but to cultivate a respectful, dignified, and pure approach to Vajrayana practice.
From Liturgy to Practice: Learning the Complete Tsok Ritual
The course provided comprehensive instruction covering every essential component of Guru Rinpoche Tsok.
Understanding the Tsok Liturgy
Students learned the overall structure of the Guru Rinpoche Tsok practice, including the sequence of recitation and the significance of each stage. Rather than simply following along with the text, participants gradually developed a deeper understanding of the meaning behind every section of the liturgy.
Learning the Ritual Instruments
Khenpo personally demonstrated the proper use of the vajra, bell, damaru drum, and other ritual implements. Beyond their external form, each sacred instrument carries profound symbolic meaning and serves as an integral part of Vajrayana practice.
Mudras and Mantras
Participants were also taught the ritual mudras and mantras used throughout the Tsok offering. Every gesture, every mantra, and every detail of the practice embodies the transformative wisdom and blessing lineage of Vajrayana.
Mandala Arrangement and Torma Offerings
The course further included instruction on arranging the Tsok mandala and preparing and offering tormas. Through these practical lessons, students gained a complete understanding of how each element contributes to the integrity and sacredness of the offering.
Throughout the course, everyone participated with great enthusiasm and sincerity. Students practiced together repeatedly, demonstrating each section, supporting one another, and gradually becoming familiar with every aspect of the ritual.
This was more than a classroom experience—it was a shared journey into authentic Dharma practice.
Learning by Doing
To help participants truly integrate the teachings, the course emphasized repeated hands-on practice.
Rather than simply explaining the ritual, Khenpo personally guided students through each stage again and again. From chanting the liturgy and melodies to playing the drum, ringing the bell, holding the vajra, and coordinating the various ritual instruments, every participant actively took part in different responsibilities.
Students were not passive observers. Under the guidance of their teacher, they entered the practice directly, learning how to perform a complete Tsok offering in accordance with the tradition.
These repeated practice sessions gave everyone a much deeper appreciation of the rhythm, coordination, and spirit of Tsok offering. More importantly, they strengthened participants' confidence and devotion toward Guru Rinpoche.
Tsok itself is regarded as a profound practice for accumulating merit, purifying obscurations, removing obstacles, and restoring samaya. Having the opportunity to receive these teachings and practice directly under the personal guidance of one's teacher was a rare and precious blessing for every participant.
A Joyous Graduation on Guru Rinpoche Tsok Day
One week after the completion of the course, the sangha gathered once again on the next Guru Rinpoche Tsok Day, making the occasion an especially auspicious conclusion to the training.
Under the guidance of Venerable Khenpo Tsering Tashi, everyone practiced "Shower of Blessings", Guru Rinpoche Guru Yoga composed by Mipham Rinpoche, reciting and practicing together with joyful devotion and pure faith.
This gathering also became the first opportunity for students to apply everything they had learned over the previous three weeks.
From chanting, drumming, cymbals, vajra and bell coordination, to the many ritual responsibilities required during Tsok, participants worked together harmoniously, each fulfilling their role with confidence and care. Other sangha members supported the preparation, chanting, photography, and many behind-the-scenes tasks that allowed the practice to unfold smoothly.
The entire Tsok offering was solemn, harmonious, and deeply inspiring.
When everyone joined together in the Tsok melodies, many participants felt something beyond simply singing. The voices expressed the collective faith, gratitude, and joyful aspiration of the sangha, naturally arising within the sacred blessings of Guru Rinpoche Tsok Day.
Many students shared that the course had given them much more than technical knowledge of the ritual. Through practicing together, they experienced a deeper connection with Guru Rinpoche's blessings and discovered the warmth, strength, and inspiration of practicing as a spiritual community.
Certificates and Gratitude
Following the Tsok practice, the course coordinator offered heartfelt thanks to Khenpo on behalf of all participants.
Khenpo then personally presented certificates of completion to each student, encouraging everyone to continue applying what they had learned by participating in the monthly Guru Rinpoche Tsok practice.
For many students, the certificate represented far more than completing a course. It symbolized another genuine step forward on the Vajrayana path of hearing, contemplation, and meditation.
The successful completion of this program was made possible through Khenpo's compassionate guidance, together with the wholehearted dedication, joyful participation, and mutual support of every member of the sangha. It was this shared aspiration that made both the course and the concluding Tsok offering especially meaningful.
Continuing the Path of Study and Practice
During the pandemic, Wisdom Wheel successfully completed three full rounds of systematic study of The Words of My Perfect Teacher under Khenpo Tsering Tashi's guidance.
This Guru Rinpoche Tsok Training Course represents another important milestone in Wisdom Wheel's commitment to integrating systematic Dharma study with authentic Vajrayana practice.
From hearing the teachings to actual practice, from intellectual understanding to direct participation, and from individual cultivation to collective practice, Wisdom Wheel continues to provide overseas practitioners with a stable, respectful, and authentic environment for learning the Dharma.
Guru Rinpoche Tsok is far more than an external ceremony. For Vajrayana practitioners, it is a monthly opportunity to reconnect with the Three Jewels, one's teacher, and Guru Rinpoche's enlightened blessings.
Through this course, participants learned not only the ritual itself, but also how to approach every aspect of practice with reverence, purity of intention, and unwavering faith.
May the blessings of Guru Rinpoche continue to inspire all practitioners on the path.
Guru Rinpoche Knows.
May all be auspicious
